Recover close to home at Appomattox Health and Rehab
The goal at Appomattox Health and Rehabilitation Center is for patients to gain strength and independence during their stay, so that they are able to go home and continue life as it was before, or possibly, even better than before.
The 60-bed facility, located just across the street from Appomattox County High School, is filled with double-occupancy rooms, which creates a family-style environment for its residents.
The staff at Appomattox Health and Rehabilitation Center work together to make sure their patients know they are cared for on not only a physical level, but on an emotional and spiritual level as well.
Between family visits, group activities such as music, bingo or other games, socials, and one-on-one visits with the staff, patients are able to interact with others in a variety of ways during their stay.
Personalized Care
Each patient has an individualized schedule, seven days a week. Care plans may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy. The center’s Admissions Director, Crystal Butler, explained that patients discover that having a daily routine makes it easier to make plans for families and friends to visit during free time, without interrupting important skill therapies.
The facility has been renovated to include the installation of an ADL (Activities of Daily Living) suite. Patients complete essential skills such as bathing, eating, transferring, and toileting in this beautiful suite. Additionally, patients are able to enjoy cooking, cleaning, and complete laundry skills there as well.
The Physical Therapy Gym was also renovated which includes state of the art equipment where patients can maximize their recovery.
The facility also offers a newly renovated dining room where patients can enjoy meals in a homelike environment and socialize with others. A stacked stone fireplace and bookshelves offer a warm enjoyable accent to this area. Patients can also choose to have meals delivered to their room.
Appomattox Health and Rehabilitation Center offers therapies for those with respiratory diseases, cardiac issues, stroke rehabilitation needs, as well as those recovering from an accident or needing post-surgical care. The center also accepts patients needing long term care services. There are nurses and CNA’s available to meet patients’ needs around the clock.
Treat You Like Family
At Appomattox Health and Rehab, staff members are able to visit with each patient daily, checking in to meet needs or to simply say hello and visit.
“It really is like a big family around here,” Crystal said. The staff and patients celebrate birthdays and holidays together, they have dance parties on Fridays, and the staff congratulates each patient as they complete their therapies and are strong enough to go home.
Crystal added that the staff celebrates each patient’s return home with a fun celebration goodbye song:
“You just finished therapy - you’re finally going home.
We had a lot of fun with you, we’re sad to see you go.
You are a whole lot stronger now, and you did really great!
So, please come back and visit us, on a later date. Woo!”
The staff at Appomattox Health and Rehab Center not only care about their patients, they care about the community too. A few examples include when they hosted community cookout, an outdoor movie night, and a community carnival at the facility. They also host events outside of the center such as their annual Kicking Cancer Out dance, the Bowling for a Cause event, and benefit events to raise funds for veterans in need.
Appomattox Health and Rehabilitation Center staff strives to give the best care possible and treat their patients like family.
