Farm fresh produce, meats, eggs and more at Wilt Family Farms - temporarily closed
Matt and Ashley Wilt both grew up on farms in northern Virginia. In recent years, as they watched the area grow more and more commercialized and congested, their desire to go back to their roots of farm living, (and the idea of raising their two daughters in the country) seemed more and more ideal.
Appomattox was an easy choice
Matt Wilt is the great, great, great grandson of the late Wilmer McLean; the owner of the now-famous McLean House where Lee surrendered to Grant, ending the Civil War in 1865. (Visit the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park to learn more about the McLean family.)
With such a neat family heritage (and because of the great farming climate) the choice was easy. In 2014, the Wilts bought a 60 acre farm in Appomattox - only a few miles from where Matt’s ancestors once lived. Two years later, Wilt Family Farms was open for business.
Farm fresh meats and produce
Wilt Family Farms offers their own farm-raised and freshly processed sausage, lamb, ground beef and steaks inside their farm store. Each of their meats is USDA inspected, ensuring that you are receiving good quality farm-fresh food every time you make a purchase.
The farm store also offers chicken and duck eggs for sale as well as fresh seasonal produce grown on the Wilt’s farm.
Additionally, if you’re interested in picking produce straight from the field, the Wilt’s welcome the community to enjoy that experience when each crop ripens.
During harvesting seasons, Ashley suggests calling ahead early in the morning (Tuesday through Saturday) to find out if the fields have been picked over. Ashley explained that once a crop has ripened, the community is eager to enjoy it. Pick-your-own-produce has become a popular activity among locals!
Wilt’s Farm store also offers specialty items such as bird feeders, natural cleaning products and goat’s milk soaps.
Meeting needs for homeowners and farmers
Need mulch? There is also a variety of mulch and topsoil available for purchase. Both are sold by the scoop, (or, “yard bucket”) which measures approximately 27 cubic feet. Their mulch selection includes double-shred and triple-shred options available in black, red, or brown. And, for a small fee, they will deliver the mulch or topsoil up to 30 miles from the farm.
Matt and Ashley also raise and sell Kune Kune pigs, Hampshire sheep, Nigerian dwarf goats, rabbits, and beef cattle.
They offer a variety of feeds for cattle, horses, chickens, dogs, turkeys, sheep and goats. They also sell pine shavings for animal bedding as well as straw and hay.
What to Expect at Wilt Family Farms:
Spring: Annual plants, vegetable plants, hanging baskets, and herbs such as basil, parsley, cilantro, rosemary and sage are available in the greenhouse from March 1st through Mother’s Day each year.
Summer: Crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and squash are available for sale in the farm store or you can pick them directly from the Wilt Family Farm fields during open hours.
Fall: Wilt Family Farms offers a beautiful selection of potted mums for you to choose from each fall.
Winter: The farm continues to sell meats, eggs, animal feeds, hay, straw and more all winter long.
From March through October - on the fourth Saturday of each month - from 9am until noon, the farm offers a Small Animal Swap for community members who may want to trade their chickens, ducks, goats and more. There is no fee to participate and the community is welcome to sell yard sale items during the swap as well.
Wilt Family Farms is open year-round, Tuesday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm, and on Saturdays from 8:30am until 2pm. Check out their website and follow them on Facebook. Call the store at 434-414-2123, or send an email to wiltfamilyfarms@aol.com for more information.
