Serenity Salon: Ready to help you look good and feel great!

Born and raised in Appomattox County, Gina Wright is proud to be part of this community.

Gina owns Serenity Salon, located on her family’s homestead. For nearly 21 years, Gina has been cutting, coloring, and styling hair in her quaint shop out in the countryside of Concord. Inside the adorable building with the teal painted door is one hair washing station, one stylists’ station, a sitting area, a restroom, and a storage area which is filled with hair colors and other styling products. The building is small, but inside, there is a lot of love.

Treating you like family

What’s special about this unique shop is that clients truly get to spend one-on-one time with Gina as they receive their fresh new looks. Because of the shop’s smaller size and homey atmosphere, people tend to feel like they are visiting a friend.

When a family arrives for multiple appointments, kids are free to play in the sitting area or watch a movie on the salon’s television while they await their turn. Gina says the small size of her shop really helps her to create a bond with her clients, and she sees most of them as extended family. (Not to mention, being from Appomattox County - several of her clients are her family!)

About four years ago, Serenity Salon had gained such popularity, and Gina was also in the midst of raising two teenage boys with full schedules of their own, so she knew she needed extra hands in the shop. That’s when she brought in her long-time friend (since high school) and fellow hair stylist, Ashley McDowel. Gina and Ashley had attended stylist school together 20-plus years ago, and have cheered each on other through the years.

Bringing Ashley into the salon answered many prayers for Gina. She explains that the two friends think alike and work alike, so they make a wonderful team. Gina sees clients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and Ashley take appointments on Mondays and Fridays. No matter which day of the week, you’re sure to have a great experience at Serenity Salon. If you’re able, like and follow the salon on Facebook, too.

Hand crafted jewelry and more

Six years ago, between being a wife, a full-time mom to two boys and four dogs, and running her salon, Gina also managed to find the time to start a hobby making earrings. Gina originally made a few pairs for herself, and then gave some to friends. Those friends had friends who wanted a pair and so on. Eventually, Gina would begin her earring brand “Leather, Glitter, and Grace.”

Gina explains where the name came from:

“Leather” - because that’s what most of her earrings are made from.

“Glitter” - because of “the glam factor”

“& Grace” - because of the grace she’s received from Jesus. Gina explains that she always wants to give God the glory for her talents. She also includes a Bible verse on each earring card (package) in hopes that someone may look up that verse and receive an encouragement.

All of Gina’s boho and whimsical style earrings are made with hypoallergenic nickel-free hooks. The material she uses includes genuine leather, wood, cork, and some acrylics. Her favorite thing to do when making earrings is to include a variety of style, color, and textures while using the different materials. Additionally, Gina makes leather wreaths and other crafts as well.

Gina’s earrings are sold at Serenity Salon, That’s Too Cute Boutique (Appomattox and Lynchburg locations) and at Geneses Salon in Appomattox. You can follow her earring page on Instagram, Facebook and join her Facebook VIP group as well. She restocks her earrings with new styles each week.

Ashley also makes jewelry, including copper earrings, rings, and bracelets through her brand Holcomb Rock Copper. The two friends are often found selling their wares at local markets and festivals in the spring and fall. The copper jewelry is sold at Serenity Salon and can also be found on Instagram.

How to book an appointment

If you are interested in making a hair appointment at Serenity Salon, you can call or text Gina at 434-660-4428. For Ashley, call or text 434-944-0849. Leave a message because Gina and Ashley may be busy with a client when you call. It’s not easy to answer the phone when you’re coloring hair, for example!

Your message should include your name, what type of service (cut, style, color, eyebrow waxing, etc.) you’re looking for, and your availability if possible. Depending on the service you’re requesting, appointments are generally booked between two weeks and six weeks out, so be sure to call ahead!

Be sure to also Like and Follow Serenity Salon on Facebook. Hours of operation are mainly Monday through Friday, 8am - 6pm for hair appointments and for those coming in to shop for handmade jewelry and crafts.

This shop is around the corner from my home. I’ve always wondered when I’ve seen the sign. Thank you so much for introducing this business to the community. I will be sure to share when folks are looking for a stylist!
